An Online Program for Leaders Who Want to Build More Reliable Organizations

Improving organizational reliability requires more than understanding leadership, communication, or risk management as individual subjects. It requires understanding how these capabilities interact, influence one another, and together shape the way organizations perform.

Designing Reliable Organizations was created to help leaders develop that understanding.

Built around the AeroLeadership Framework, the program combines lessons from aviation, psychology, human factors, and organizational systems thinking into a structured learning experience that is both practical and evidence-based. Rather than presenting isolated management techniques, each chapter builds upon the previous one, gradually revealing how reliable organizations are designed and sustained over time.

The objective is not to teach people how to operate like pilots.

It is to understand what one of the world's safest industries has learned about human performance, and to explore how those lessons can strengthen organizations in every sector.

Why This Program Was Created

During my years in commercial aviation, I repeatedly experienced how leadership, communication, teamwork, and disciplined decision-making influenced everyday operations. While flying an aircraft and managing a business are fundamentally different activities, the underlying human challenges were often remarkably similar.

The recurring patterns

  • People misunderstand one another.
  • Important information is not always shared.
  • Hierarchy influences whether concerns are raised.
  • Assumptions replace observation.
  • Pressure changes the way people think.

At the same time, psychology and organizational research have provided valuable insights into how people think, communicate, learn, and respond under pressure. Yet these disciplines are often studied separately, making it difficult to understand how they influence one another in practice.

This program was developed to bring these perspectives together.

It combines operational lessons from aviation with established psychological principles to provide a practical framework for understanding organizational reliability as an interconnected system.

How the Program Is Structured

The program is designed to build understanding progressively.

Rather than presenting a collection of independent management topics, each chapter builds upon the previous one to develop a systems perspective on organizational reliability.

While each chapter can be studied individually, the greatest value comes from completing the program in sequence, allowing the relationships between the different concepts to emerge naturally.

Introduction

The opening chapter lays the foundation for the entire program. It introduces Crew Resource Management, explores its evolution within aviation, and explains why its principles remain relevant for organizations in every industry.
