Why AeroLeadership Exists

The idea for AeroLeadership did not emerge from a single event, but from a question that continued to resurface throughout my career in commercial aviation.

Crew Resource Management had transformed the way aviation understood leadership, communication, teamwork, decision-making, and human performance. Yet many of the challenges discussed during CRM training seemed remarkably familiar whenever I spoke with professionals working outside aviation. Whether the conversation involved healthcare, engineering, project management, manufacturing, education, or business, similar patterns repeatedly appeared. Important information was not shared, assumptions remained unchallenged, communication became fragmented, and capable people sometimes produced outcomes that nobody had intended.

The more I explored these similarities, the clearer it became that the principles behind Crew Resource Management were not simply aviation practices. They reflected broader principles of human performance that applied wherever people worked together in complex environments.

At the same time, it became increasingly apparent that these operational lessons could not be understood in isolation. Psychology, human factors, and organizational systems thinking provided the theoretical foundations that explained why these patterns occur and how organizations can create conditions that support more reliable performance.

AeroLeadership was created to bring these perspectives together. Its purpose is not to suggest that organizations should operate like airlines, but to make decades of learning about human performance accessible to leaders, teams, and organizations seeking to understand how reliable performance can be designed, supported, and sustained.

Our Approach

The purpose of AeroLeadership is not to suggest that every organization should operate like an airline, nor that aviation has solved every challenge associated with human performance. Rather, it recognizes that aviation has spent decades examining why capable people sometimes produce poor outcomes and how organizations can create conditions that support more reliable performance.

Equally important is understanding the psychological mechanisms behind those observations. Human behavior is influenced by perception, cognition, stress, communication, group dynamics, organizational culture, and countless other factors that shape how people interpret situations and interact with one another.

By combining operational experience with psychological insight, the AeroLeadership Framework seeks to explain not only what contributes to reliable performance, but also why those principles work and how they can be thoughtfully applied in different organizational contexts.

Meet the Founders

Robert

Robert is an airline captain with operational experience in commercial aviation, where effective leadership, communication, teamwork, situational awareness, and disciplined decision-making directly influence both safety and performance.

Throughout his career, he became increasingly interested in the broader lessons that aviation offers about human performance. Many of the challenges encountered on the flight deck—sharing information, managing workload, questioning assumptions, responding to uncertainty, and coordinating under pressure—also exist in boardrooms, project teams, hospitals, manufacturing, emergency services, and countless other organizational environments.

This interest led to the development of the AeroLeadership Framework and the Designing Reliable Organizations program, with the aim of making these principles accessible beyond aviation.

Paula

Paula is a psychologist whose work focuses on understanding the factors that influence human behavior, communication, decision-making, psychological safety, stress, and team dynamics.

Her perspective complements the operational experience gained through aviation by providing a deeper understanding of the cognitive and behavioral processes that influence performance in individuals and teams. Rather than viewing organizational challenges solely through procedures or structures, psychology helps explain why people perceive situations differently, how assumptions develop, why communication sometimes fails, and how environments influence behavior.

Together, these perspectives form the foundation of the AeroLeadership Framework.

Why We Work Together

The development of the AeroLeadership Framework has always been a collaborative effort.

Operational experience provides practical observations about how people perform in complex environments. Psychology provides evidence-based explanations for why those observations occur. Neither perspective is sufficient on its own. Together, they create a broader understanding of organizational reliability that is grounded in both experience and research.

Every chapter of Designing Reliable Organizations reflects this combination of practical application and scientific understanding.

Looking Ahead

AeroLeadership began with a single educational program, but the long-term vision extends beyond one course.

Our aim is to continue developing educational resources that help leaders and organizations better understand human performance, organizational reliability, and the systems that influence both. Future initiatives may include additional courses, articles, research summaries, workshops, and practical resources that expand upon the principles introduced through the AeroLeadership Framework.

Throughout this work, our objective remains the same: to make complex ideas accessible, encourage thoughtful discussion, and contribute to organizations that are better equipped to support the people within them.
